Casal de Loivos is a town in the municipality of Alijó. Its origins are ancient, having received a charter from King Sancho I in 1260.
It is located near the towns of Pinhão and Sabrosa, in the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, the origin of the world-famous Port Wine. At an altitude of approximately 500 meters, it offers stunning views of the Douro River and the village of Pinhão, its iconic railway and bridge.
The views from the Casal de Loivos Viewpoint, shared with Quinta Vale das Papas, were considered by the BBC to be among the most beautiful in the world.
Quinta Vale das Papas is located on the outskirts of Casal de Loivos, next to Fonte Santa. It is the result of the merger of several agricultural plots and took the name of one of the plots. It has a total of five hectares, with agricultural areas and areas of escarpment and rustic forest. In addition to tourism, agricultural production is important, mainly of grapes and olives. There are also several fruit trees that provide food for the house and trees typical of the region such as the carrasco (kermes oak) and an unusually high number of junipers.
